Chasing The Light
and thoughts on darkness.
Chasing the Light
There was a time…
when I believed
the light
was all I needed.
I chased it…
welcomed it…
held it
with grateful hands.
Certain…
that if I could
stay there…
I would finally
understand.
But light…
without shadow…
has nowhere
to rest.
A mountain…
without its valleys…
is only
a line.
A melody…
without silence…
never learns
to breathe.
Even the stars…
wait…
for the night.
So perhaps…
I have been
looking at darkness
all wrong.
Perhaps…
it was never
sent to hide
the light.
Perhaps…
it was always
the place…
where light
could finally
be seen.
The sorrow…
did not diminish
the joy.
It taught me
how precious
joy had always been.
The breaking…
did not make me
less whole.
It opened
the places
where grace
could enter.
And all the things
I once wished away…
the waiting…
the questions…
the ache…
the long nights…
became
unexpected companions…
quietly teaching me…
that even
the smallest light
is never small
when everything
around it
is dark.
Now…
I do not ask
for a life
without shadows.
I ask
for eyes
that remember…
the dawn
has never
argued
with the night.
It simply arrives.
…and somehow…
the darkness…
has been
holding
the light
all along.

Lovely. Truly, lovely.
The shadows have much to teach us.
